Road Trip: Greece

Greece is undoubtedly ideal for a road trip year-round. Combining mountains and the sea, every destination is unique.

Starting from Thrace and ending in the Peloponnese, we suggest a journey that covers all of mainland Greece and invites you to experience the authentic Greek experience. 

Thrace: Didymoteicho and Xanthi 

Starting your journey in Thrace, the first stop is Didymoteicho, a historic town with a strong Byzantine and Ottoman character. It is worth visiting Didymoteicho Castle, which offers a wonderful view of the area. Next, head to Xanthi, a city known for its traditional houses and narrow streets. The old town of Xanthi, with its strong Turkish and Byzantine influence, combines tradition with a unique atmosphere. The area around Xanthi is full of natural beauty and traditional villages. 

Macedonia: Veria and Naoussa 

Leaving Thrace, we head towards Macedonia. The first stop is Veria, a city full of history and culture. Here, you can visit the traditional Jewish neighborhood, Barbouta, the Byzantine Museum, and the Apostle Paul’s step. After Veria, head towards Naoussa, another Macedonian town known for its local wines and picturesque squares. Don’t miss visiting the Seli Ski Center if your trip is in the winter. 

Epirus: Ioannina and Zagori 

From Macedonia, the next stop is Epirus. The city of Ioannina, built around Lake Pamvotis, impresses with its castle and the island on the lake, where the Monastery of Panagia is located. From Ioannina, head to Zagori, an area full of traditional stone villages protected by UNESCO. Here, you can explore the Vikos Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world in proportion to its width. 

Thessaly: Larissa and Meteora 

Moving south, Thessaly is the next stop. Larissa is known for its rich history. From there, head to Meteora, one of the most impressive destinations in Greece, attracting tourists from all over the world. The monastic rocks towering above the area host the famous Meteora monasteries, which are a unique cultural and natural monument. Don’t miss hiking around the rocks and visiting the monasteries. 

Central Greece: Livadeia and Delphi 

Leave Thessaly behind and head to Central Greece. Livadeia, a small but historic city, is known for its long history and natural springs. From there, proceed to Delphi, the archaeological complex that was the religious center of the ancient world and the famous Oracle of Apollo. The area around Delphi is enchanting, with a view of the Corinthian Gulf and Mount Parnassus. 

Peloponnese: Nafplio and Monemvasia 

Arriving in the Peloponnese, the first stop is Nafplio, one of the most picturesque cities in Greece, with traditional architecture and a strong historical character. Explore the narrow streets, visit the Palamidi Fortress and Bourtzi, and enjoy the view of the harbor. The next stop is Monemvasia, built on a rock. The atmosphere of the place and the stunning sea view make it one of the most impressive destinations in the Peloponnese.
