Digital Driving License: What you need to know 

In an era where everything is going digital, it was only a matter of time before the classic driver’s license was upgraded to a digital document, fully equivalent to the physical one, making life easier for all drivers. 

What is the digital driver’s license? 

The digital driver’s license is an electronic version of the regular license, which includes all the details of the original and can be stored in your mobile phone’s digital wallet. 

The main advantage is ease of use, as you can always have it with you, ready to be used at any moment, even if you forgot to place it in the car’s document folder with the other required documents according to the Road Traffic Code. 

How to obtain the digital driver’s license 

After installing the official Gov.gr app, log in with your TaxisNet credentials for identity verification. 

Next, in order for the system to retrieve your details and photo, first add your ID, and then in the corresponding field that will appear, you can also add your driver’s license. 

Finally, you will be given the option to add the digital license to your phone’s wallet. 

Where and how to use the digital driver’s license 

Since the documents are fully equivalent to the physical ones, there is no need for the physical presence of the license during a check. 

The validity check is done by showing the QR code of the digital document to the inspector. 

The inspector will scan it with their own device, sending an approval option (yes or no) to your phone, along with a unique code that you must provide. By entering this code, the verification of your details will be successfully completed. 

Finally, its use is legal within Greece; however, unfortunately, it cannot be used abroad. 

Advantages of the digital driver’s license 

Having the license in digital form makes daily life easier, as it frees you from carrying documents. Additionally, the renewal process is much simpler since it is done electronically. Finally, in case of a traffic control, the verification of your details is quick and effective. 

It is also important to note that the digital license covers all cases, whether you have forgotten it or in case of loss.
