Insurance and damage costs for rental cars: what you need to know!

Renting a car is a very convenient solution, whether for personal vacations or business trips. However, when using a foreign vehicle, it is essential to be very careful, as any damage—from a simple scratch to a minor bump while parking—can result in significant financial liability for you.

How much does damage to a rental car cost? What does insurance cover and what doesn’t? In this article, we will analyze in detail how the cost is determined, what insurance covers, and what measures we can take!

How is damage cost estimated?

A) TYPE AND EXTENT OF DAMAGE

– minor scratches

– need for repainting

– dents

– dents

If the damage requires the vehicle to stay at the workshop for an extended period, the cost can increase significantly.

B) USE OF SPECIALIZED SOFTWARE – DAT (Deutsche Automobil Treuhand)

Many car rental companies use the DAT application to objectively and fairly assess the value of the damage. This software calculates the necessary spare parts, the area of damage, labor time, and market prices.

C) ADDITIONAL CHARGES

The final amount you pay is not limited to just the repair cost! Depending on the company, additional administrative fees may apply.

What does insurance cover?

The insurance you add is very important! Of course, it varies from company to company, but the basics are: with basic insurance, you will be charged up to a certain amount regardless of the damage amount, while with full insurance you may pay nothing or only a minimal fee depending on the incident.

WARNING: Not all damages are covered by insurance! For example, damages to tires, rims, windshield, and the underside of the car are often excluded.

What measures should you take?

(In many companies this is stated in their policy or recommended by customer service representatives.)

  • Take photos & videos from every side of the car upon pickup.
  • Ask in advance what each insurance covers and what it does not.
  • Carefully read the rental terms and conditions, as well as the details printed on the voucher you receive when booking.

Damage to a rental car is never a pleasant experience—neither for the driver nor for the company. Costs can range from zero to quite high, depending on the damage, the company’s policy, and the way they assess the charges.
