Archaeological monuments
Archaeological site of Dion
Dion was one of the ancient Macedonian states, on the eastern side of Mount Olympus, which was founded in honor of the god Zeus. In the area there is an archaeological museum with artefacts of Dion and the rest of Pieria area together with the ruins of the town just 4 km from the sea.
Beaches
Pieria’s rich coastline extends over 70 km and is filled with people during the summer season. Tourists visit the Paralia beach, Neoi Pori, Olympiki Akti, Gritsa, Platamonas and Skotina. Most of them are organized with tourist infrastructure and cosmopolitan nightlife.
Sports / Activities
Mount Olympus
The highest and most popular mountain in Greece is the place inhabited by the 12 gods of mythology. It is the second tallest mountain in the Balkans but also in the whole region of Europe from the Alps to the Caucasus. The roads and trails crossing Olympus provide an opportunity for hikers and visitors to become acquainted with the Olympus. Most known is the European route E4 moving west from Litochoro to the peaks, through Enipea canyon. Summer ascents to the mythical mountain of gods are organized between June and September, when the shelters are open and the weather allows an easy climb without snow equipment.
Elatohori Ski Resort
The traditional village of Elatohori is well known for its ski resort located at an altitude of 1,400-1,800 meters. It is on the southeastern slopes of the Pieria’s mountain. It is 8 km away from the village and 36 km of total the town of Katerini.
Sightseeing
Castle of Platamon
The best preserved castle in northern and central Greece, is a Crusader castle located southeast of Mount Olympus, next to the highway. The castle was built sometime between 1,204 and 1,222 and through the years it was occupied by the Turks, the Enetians and in the end by the Greeks. All of them used it as a fortress. Today the castle belongs to the Byzantine Antiquities and it is open to the public.
Traditional village of Palaios Panteleimon
At an altitude of 440 meters on the eastern slopes of Mount Olympus is the traditional settlement of Palaios Panteleimon. This is one of the best examples of traditional Macedonian architecture, with a stunning view of Thermaikos gulf.
