Archaeological sites and museums
White Tower
The most characteristic monument of Thessaloniki is the White Tower, part of the demolished Ottoman fortifications. Built in the 15th century, has 6 floors and 34 meters height and today serves as a museum.
Arch of Galerius (Kamara)
The famous arch of Thessaloniki is located on Egnatia street and was constructed in honor of the Roman Emperor Galerius. Kamara was part of the Roman palace that was developing in the current locations of Navarino Square and Hippodrome.
Rotonda
Named after its circular shape, Rotonda was initially built as a mausoleum of Galerius. However, it was converted into a Christian church of St. George and is included in Early Christian and Byzantine monuments of the city.
Archaeological Museum
This is Thessaloniki’s most important museum and it operates since 1962. It houses ancient finds from excavations around Thessaloniki and the wider region of Macedonia.
Museum of Byzantine Culture
The museum is the center of Thessaloniki, on Stratou Avenue, and hosts exhibits of various aspects from Byzantium era and the Ottoman Empire.
Jewish Museum
The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki was founded to honor the rich and creative Sephardic heritage, of a culture developed in this city since the 15th century.
Ataturk Museum
It is the house where Kemal Ataturk “father of Turkish” was born. It is located near the city center, behind the Turkish consulate.
Religious monuments
Some of the most important Byzantium churches in Greece are located in Thessaloniki and are monuments of world cultural heritage under the protection of UNESCO. Churches like Agios Dimitrios, the magnificent Hagia Sophia, the “red church” Panagia Chalkeon and the monastery Vlatadon.
Places of tourist interest
Aristotelous Square
The largest and most famous square located on the seaside and surrounded by important and beautiful buildings, such as the Olympion and the Electra Palace Hotel.
Ladadika
This is one of the most visited hot spots in Thessaloniki for entertainment and good food. It used to be a commercial neighborhood in the past decades, very close to the port of city, with many oil and food warehouses. The name “Ladadika” is inspired from the oil stores of the past.
Science Center and Technology Museum – NOESIS
NOESIS is the most spectacular theme park in the city with a digital Planetarium, a Cosmotheater with the largest flat screen in Greece and a virtual reality simulator for unique 3D experiences. Do not miss the automotive museum and the Technopark featuring interacting exhibits.
