Pella: The Crable of Alexander the Great 

Within short drive from Thessaloniki, counties Imathia and Pella offer a wide range of major attractions, archaeological and religious interest, and three ski resorts. 

How to Get? Fly to Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” (SKG) and drive to Pella. 

Archaeological sites and museums 

Vergina – Tomb of Philip II 

At the area of Vergina was located the capital of the ancient Macedonian state, the city of Eges. Here visitors can see the royal tombs, among them the tomb of Philip II, with a rich array of historical finds of the season. 

School of Aristotle 

Very close to the town of Naoussa is the ancient city Mieza. The area is known for the school where philosopher Aristotle taught Alexander the Great. 

Archaeological site of Pella 

Pella was the capital of the Macedonian state after Eges (Vergina). The archaeological site is located at the 35th km of national road Thessaloniki to Edessa and includes a museum. In the surrounding area are the Roman colony, early Christian Pella and the necropolis. 

Religious monuments 

Byzantine churches of Veria 

In the city of Veria there are 48 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches with wonderful frescoes from the 12th to the 18th century. Among them they distinguish the Old Cathedral, the Church of Christ and the Theologian Church. 

Stand of Apostle Paul 

In Veria city there is the public forum where Apostle Paul preached the word of God. It is a historical monument that today attracts Christians to experience the tour of the Apostle. 

Panagia Sumela Monastery 

The new monastery of Panagia Sumela just outside Veria, hosts the hagiography of the Virgin Mary brought from the original Panagia Sumela in Pontos. It is a pilgrimage of thousands of faithful from around the region and throughout Greece. 

Monastery of Timios Prodromos 

On the slopes near Aliakmona’s river dam, stands the monastery built in the 14th century, with stunning views and a rich history. 

Sports / Activities 

Seli Ski Resort 

Seli is the first organized ski center in Greece, at an altitude of 1534-1900 meters. It is 24 km from Veria and 95km from Thessaloniki. 

Ski Resort 3-5 Pigadia 

At an altitude of 1,430 to 2,005 meters is the ski resort 3-5 Pigadia and it is near Naoussa city. It is the first ski center in Greece with artificial snow system and has many slopes with any degree of difficulty. 

Kaimakaktsalan (Voras) Ski Resort 

The Kaimaktsalan, also known as Voras, belongs to Pella Prefecture and is bordering with Florina and Skopje. The peak is at 2,524 meters where there is a small church. It features a modern ski center for a variety of snow activities. 

Pozar baths 

Within short drive from Aridea (13 km) are the Loutraki baths, known as Pozar. Their water has healing properties and is suitable for toning and relaxation. 

Sightseeing / Entertainment / Accommodation 

Waterfalls of Edessa 

Edessa is famous for its waterfalls formed by the river Edessaios. Today there are 2 large and some small waterfalls, attracting visitors from around the country. 

St. Nicholas Park at Naoussa 

Next to the town of Naoussa is St. Nicholas with a large park that includes the fountain of Arapistas river, a rich grove, organized sports facilities, hotels and restaurants. 

Traditional village of Paleos Agios Athanasios 

On the road to the ski resort Kaimamtsalan is the traditional village, at an altitude of 1,200 meters. Paleos Agios Athanasios offers traditional taverns, guesthouses and hotels, while blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings. 

Traditional Jewish district of Barbouta 

Barbouta is the Jewish district of Veria and exists from Roman times. It stands out for its architectural elements with the famous “sachnisia” (projections buildings) and the large doors on the buildings.
