How to replace a tire: The ultimate guide

Road safety is extremely important and one of the most common problems you may encounter is a flat tire. Changing a tire is a procedure that all drivers should be familiar with as it can save you time, money and hassle in an emergency. In the following guide, we present you in detail all the necessary steps to replace a tire.
Locating a Safe Parking Space
Your first priority is to stop in a safe place. Be sure to park the vehicle on a flat surface, never change tires on sloping ground. Ideally, choose a spot away from traffic to avoid accidents.
• Apply the parking brake and put the vehicle in park (if automatic) or in gear (if manual).
• Activate the hazard lights, place the warning triangle at the necessary distance and alert any passengers to get out of the vehicle.
• Use heavy objects (wood wedges, bricks, large rocks) on both sides of the wheel diagonally opposite the one you are changing.
Gathering Equipment

Before starting the change, make sure you have all the necessary tools
• Spare tire (spare)
• Receptacle (jack)
• Wheel spanner
• Car manual
Cover Removal and Jack Installation
• Remove the wheel cover (tension, if it has one)
• Loosen (Loosen) but do not remove the bolts (nuts / screws), using the corresponding wrench.
• Look for the right spot under the car to place the jack. Install the jack and begin raising the vehicle until the tire is off the ground.
Your car’s manual will tell you the correct place to place the jack.
Rim and Tire Removal
• Use the wheel wrench to completely loosen the bolts holding the tire. After the bolts are removed, keep them in a safe place as you will reuse them in reassembly.
• Remove the defective tire by pulling it towards you with both hands.
Fitting the Spare Tire and Cross Tightening the Bolts
Place the spare tire in the same position. Tighten the bolts by hand first, then use the wheel wrench to secure them. Tighten the bolts crosswise to make sure the tire is properly seated.
That is, tighten one first and then the one diagonally opposite – not the one right next to it.

You can carefully apply additional pressure to the horizontally placed wheel wrench with your foot as you tighten them.

Just because you replaced the defective tire with the spare, doesn’t mean your vehicle can stay with it forever! Temporary spares usually have a different tire size. They are lighter, smaller and don’t have the same speed or mileage capabilities as a permanent tire. This can affect the stability of your vehicle while driving.
So head to a garage or call the rental company for further support.
