Worn Spark Plugs: Symptoms and Causes

You’ve probably heard the phrase “the spark plug is damaged,” but do you know what it really means?

In today’s article, we will analyze the symptoms and causes related to a very important engine component: the spark plugs.

When they wear out, they cause problems in the engine, such as reduced performance, increased fuel consumption, and slow vehicle startup.

Symptoms of Worn Spark Plugs

1. Difficulty Starting the Engine

When the spark plugs aren’t working properly, the engine struggles to start. More attempts may be needed to start the car, as the ignition of the fuel-air mixture is delayed.

2. Loss of Power and Acceleration

Worn spark plugs lead to lower engine performance, resulting in a loss of power during acceleration.

3. Increased Fuel Consumption

Fuel consumption increases when the engine has trouble running normally, due to the wear and tear on the spark plugs.

4. Low Engine Performance at Low RPMs

The engine doesn’t perform well when running at low RPMs, which may indicate wear on the spark plugs.

With frequent use of the car, over time, and driving conditions such as rough roads or short trips, it is natural for spark plugs to wear out. This makes regular inspection and replacement necessary to ensure the engine operates correctly.

Some factors that accelerate their wear include:

1. High Temperatures

If the car is constantly exposed to the sun without being parked in a shaded area, it is subjected to high temperatures, which increase the likelihood of spark plug wear, especially in summer.

2. Poor-Quality Fuel

Using low-quality fuel causes the accumulation of smoke and residue on the spark plugs, leading to their wear.

3. Engine Overload

The engine is strained when accelerating suddenly or loading the car with excessive weight, causing quicker spark plug wear.

4. Oil and Contaminants

If the engine oil leaks into the spark plug area or the plugs are exposed to contaminants and dust, their proper functioning is affected, increasing the risk of wear.

Proper engine maintenance and timely spark plug replacement are crucial for the car’s good performance.

If you notice any of the above symptoms, it’s important to check the spark plug system in your vehicle.

Regular maintenance and preventive spark plug replacement will help you achieve better performance, lower fuel consumption, and a longer engine lifespan.
